Dermal Filler Pre and Post Care Instructions
Pre-Treatment Instructions & Considerations:
Schedule your Dermal Filler appointment at least 2-3 weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending, such as a wedding or a vacation.
For optimal results and to minimize the chance of bleeding or bruising, please avoid all blood-thinning medications and supplements for one week prior to your appointment if it is safe to do so and approved by your primary care provider. This includes over-the-counter medication such as Aspirin, Motrin, Ibuprofen, and Aleve. Also avoid herbal supplements such as garlic, vitamin E, ginko biloba, St. John's Wort and omega-3 capsules. ***If you have a cardiovascular history, please check with your doctor prior to stopping use of aspirin.***
Inform your provider if you have a history of Perioral Herpes to receive advice on antiviral therapy prior to treatment. Notify your provider if you have any open sores in the treatment area, as we would have to reschedule.
Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A) retinols, retinoids, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, or any "anti-aging" products for two days before and after treatment.
Avoid drinking alcohol 24 hours before or after your treatment to limit bruising.
Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of it's ingredients (such as lidocaine) or suffer from any neurological disorders.
Any injection introduces the risk for infection. For this reason, the following is taken into consideration when proceeding with injections. We will delay injectables if you:
Have had any surgical procedures (including dental procedures) in the past 30 days or are anticipating procedures in the next 30 days.
*Have had any immunizations in the past two weeks or if you’re anticipating immunizations. This includes Covid-19 & boosters.
Have had any tattooing or permanent makeup within the past two weeks.
Take any immunosuppressive/injectable medications (ex: Biologics such as Humira, Skyrizi, Stelara, Enbrel, Taltz, Cosentyx, Tremfya)
Post-Treatment Instructions:
Do not apply anything to the skin until the day after treatment: We do not want to increase the risk for infection! No cleanser, moisturizer, or makeup!
Avoid significant massaging, touching, or manipulating of the treated area unless instructed by provider for two weeks.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
If lips were treated, avoid pursing of the lips, smoking, and the use of straws for up to 48 hours.
Avoid extensive sun or heat for 72 hours.
Use Tylenol (acetaminophen) for discomfort.
If you have swelling, you may apply ice for 15 minutes each hour for the first 12-24 hours.
Try to sleep face up and slightly elevated if you experience swelling. Avoid sleeping on your side or stomach if possible to prevent dispersing the product.
Take Arnica (found on Amazon here) to help with bruising and swelling. Begin taking at least two days prior to injections. Arnica gel may be applied as well to accelerate bruise healing (found on Amazon here).
Wait a minimum of 4 weeks before receiving any skin care or laser treatments.
Dermal fillers last, on average between 6-12 months.
The most typical side effects (bruising, swelling, redness) are temporary and will resolve. However, if you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your provider immediately: dusky or white discoloration of injected areas, mottling or unusual bruising, severe or increasing pain, redness, increasing warmth or coolness to touch, severe swelling, itching, blisters, difficulty swallowing or smiling, fever, or chills. If you notice onset of any of these symptoms, call or text your provider immediately at 774-262-4265.
